The make, model, year and key system all affect the job. Smart keys and keyless entry fobs
Smart keys allow keyless entry and push-button starting. The driver keeps the fob in a pocket or bag, and the vehicle detects it when it is nearby. Depending on the car, the fob may also contain an emergency mechanical blade for manual access if the fob battery goes flat.
These systems offer convenience but are more technically involved to replace. The fob must be compatible with the vehicle and programmed correctly, and some models need specific procedures to add or erase keys. A dead fob battery does not necessarily mean the key is faulty. Many cars have a backup method for starting when the battery is low, such as holding the fob against a marked area or placing it in a designated compartment. A key card can be easily mistaken for a simple electronic accessory, yet it is part of the vehicle's starting and security system. It needs the correct equipment and programming process. Avoid forcing a card into a reader or using a damaged card repeatedly, as this can turn a minor problem into an urgent no-start situation.
Motorcycle, van and specialist vehicle keys
Not every replacement key is for a family car. Motorcycles, vans, lorries, work vehicles and some imported models can use transponder, remote or keyless systems too. A tradesperson with one working van key has a strong reason to arrange a spare before a busy week is interrupted by a lost or damaged key.
The principle remains the same: identify the vehicle accurately, establish whether an immobiliser is involved, and use the right key and programming process. Specialist vehicles can have different requirements, so it is best not to assume that a visually similar key will work.
What happens when every key is lost?
Losing the only key feels like a major problem, especially away from home or outside normal dealership hours. It does not automatically mean the vehicle has to be recovered.
